Scrap Challenge

July's icebreaker was all about scraps - What do you do with them? Do you cut them into a particular sized square? Do you throw them in a bin never to be seen again?  Do you sort them by color?  Do you {gasp} throw them out?

Since we all have scraps (except that last group of people which we won't mention again!), September's challenge is SCRAP CHALLENGE.  Make a large quilt, a doll quilt, a mug rug, a pillow, or anything at all with your scraps & bring it to the September meeting!

September's meeting is on Tuesday September 25 at 7pm at the William G. Rohrer Library in Westmont, NJ.  If you're interested in attending, RSVP to southjerseymqg@gmail.com.  Visitors are always welcome!

Other agenda items include our first ever spotlight segment (on guild member Danielle) and our batting discussion!  Please bring samples of any batting that you like to use for your projects.

July Challenge - Quilt Con block

The Modern Quilt Guild is hosting Quilt Con in February 2013.  As part of Quilt Con, the MQG issued a challenge to modern quilters to create blocks in the colors of the Quilt Con logo representing what modern quilting means.  For the July Meeting, create a block in the colors of the logo (over there in the side bar ----->) measuring 12.5 inches by whatever width you'd like {seriously, that's what it says!}.  Blocks can be made in solids or prints.  Fabric bundles have been assembled by select online fabric stores or work from stash.  If you bring your blocks to the meeting, we can send them in together.  If you are submitting blocks on your own, blocks are due no later than August 15, 2012 with your block challenge entry form.

Elizabeth Hartman will be judging the challenge blocks and the winning blocks will be made into a quilt to be raffled off at Quilt Con.  Remaining blocks will be made into quilts and donated to the Austin Children's Shelter in Austin, Texas.

May Meeting ReCap

The second meeting of the South Jersey MQG was on May 22nd.  We went through some general guild business & announcements and then dove into our book discussion.  Members brought their favorite quilting books to share with the group.  Cut the Scraps, Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts and Quilt Romance by Kaffe Fasset, Quilting for Show, Quilts Made Modern, City Quilts, and Material Obsession were among the books shared.

After the book discussion we had a fat quarter swap - a blind swap for 4 fat quarters...hopefully next time someone remembers to take some photos :)

The next SJMQG meeting is Wednesday June 27th at 7pm.  NOTE: This is not our normal meeting night due to scheduling conflicts with the library.  RSVP via the Big Tent site or email!!  For the June meeting, we'll discuss making quilts for Project Linus & any other charity work (so bring ideas!!), having a pincushion swap, and discussing plans for the rest of the summer.  Can't wait to see everyone's fabulous pincushions!

If you're a member of the SJMQG, make sure you check out the Big Tent site for the full meeting minutes and other announcements or for more information contact us at southjerseymqg@gmail.com.

We're slowly getting up and running...we've set up a SJMQG Big Tent group to post events and general guild information.  Flickr, twitter, and facebook pages will follow shortly!  Guild Officers and dues have not been decided yet.  Dues will be discussed and collected when the guild sets up a bank account.

The May meeting of the SJMQG will be on Tuesday May 22nd at 7pm at the William G. Rohrer Library in Westmont, NJ.  If you're interested in attending, RSVP to southjerseymqg@gmail.com.

At the May meeting we'll be doing a fat quarter swap.  Bring 4 fat quarters for a blind swap (put them in a bag or something to conceal them) - modern fabric & quilt shop quality please.  We'll also be having a group discussion on modern quilting books.  Bring your favorite to share with the group!

Don't forget to bring something for show and tell.
